The Brunswick Street Bookstore is one of Melbourne’s most complimented bookstores, with a twenty year tradition of excellent service and no-stress browsing. We began trading in 1987. In those days it was a tiny shop in a street full of places to let. Two years later Fitzroy’s renaissance had begun – Brunswick Street was getting busier, new cafes and shops appeared, and we moved the bookstore to our current, much larger premises. We were able to create the bookshop we had always wanted. The idea was to make The Brunswick Street Bookstore the kind of place we would shop ourselves. We wanted a place where people could browse all day. Our reputation was forged by stocking everything that matters in new release and backlist fiction. We also boast a huge selection of non-fiction titles – concentrating on history, politics, biography science, literature and cultural studies, but not forgetting cooking, gardening, kids books, and travel. In recent years we have expanded our focus to include art, design and architecture. In 2003 we opened a new light-filled retail space on the first floor of our shop. Designed by Melbourne architect Peter Brew – this space is devoted to the visual arts. No longer just a haven for lovers of fine literature, The Brunswick Street Bookstore is now a mecca for Melbourne’s art and design community.
